Head coach Mike Locksley and his staff are back down to seven signed commitments after a source confirmed that former Old Dominion running back Trequan Jones has been released from his signing.
Jones, a 5-foot-9, 183-pound running back, was Maryland's first transfer portal commitment of the offseason after visiting the first weekend the portal was open.
Michigan State, Cincinnati, Louisville and Pittsburgh were in the mix for Jones prior to ending his recruitment following his first and only visit after entering the transfer portal.
“I just knew I was going to end up coming back to Maryland and I really just didn’t want to waste my time with these visits. I was only thinking about Maryland the whole time. I knew where I felt best at, where I felt most comfortable at, where I was most wanted at so I just went ahead and locked it in," Jones told IBG.
The experienced back was slated to serve as a key piece to Maryland's rushing attack as a veteran piece alongside DeJuan Williams, who made his return to the program official this week, while the program also signed former USC running back Harry Dalton, who joins the program with four years remaining.
Jones posted three career 100-yard rushing games with two of them at ODU, including 101 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries in a week three win vs. Virginia Tech. He ranked as Old Dominion’s highest-graded player in 2025, per PFF, while logging 20 or more snaps in six games and drew ten or more carries in four games in his lone season with the Monarchs.
Jones was rated a three-star signee and an 89 overall by On3, ranked as the 15th-best running back at the time of his commitment. Maryland's seven transfer portal commitments are RB Harry Dalton, WR Na’eem Gladding, WR Chris Durr Jr, TE Preston Howard, DL Lavon Johnson, DL Derrick LeBlanc, CB Amari Jackson.
