Maryland Athletics announces sellout for non-conference finale vs. Virginia Tech

After already trending that way for months and nearing the mark at the start of the week, Maryland Athletics has officially announced a sellout for Saturday night's non-conference finale between Maryland and Virginia Tech.

Saturday marks the fourth sellout over Maryland's last six home games, an impressive feat for Jim Smith through his first full year as the university's athletic director.

With a sellout now confirmed and Saturday set to rank among the top 25 best attended games in program history, head coach Mike Locksley has a chance to prove himself. Although he is 9-8 in one possession games since 2021, Mike Locksley has been head coach for just two of the 25 best attended games in program history with Maryland outscored 110-15. Both losses also came against James Franklin during his tenure with Penn State. Though Maryland has an opportunity to control the area against a regional foe, Maryland now has a chance to let their play do the talking with butts in the seat once more.

Both Maryland and Virginia Tech enter the weekend looking to move to 3-0 before shifting to conference play.

“I think I've been on the record. Our student section has been great over the last two years, three years here for us," Locksley said. "Even more so, I thought this year even more of an impact in Game One, facing an FCS opponent and to see 10,000 students there at the beginning of the game, really is encouraging that they get it. We definitely will need them to be here this weekend. A night game here at The Shell, opportunity to defend The Shell for us, opportunity for both teams to advance in their season, and our last true non-conference game before we get into the conference.”

Kickoff is set for 7:35 PM on FS1.
