Jahmir’s Young final decision is in—he’ll bypass the 2022 NBA Draft and will officially suit up for Maryland next season.
Young announced his commitment back on April 27 with the school announcing his signing just six days later as the former DeMatha product and Charlotte guard became the first portal commitment for first-year head coach Kevin Willard.
"First, I want to thank Charlotte for these past three years. I picked Maryland because it is a chance for me to come back home and to do something special," Young said after signing with Maryland. "I am excited to play under Coach Willard and his staff. To come home and to be able to do something special while being close to my family is something I couldn't pass up."
Maryland had to replace both starting guards this season after Fatts Russell exhausted his eligibility while Eric Ayala signed with an agent, ultimately ending his college career despite an additional season of eligibility. After earning first-team All-Conference USA honors and being named first-team NABC All-District 11, Young finished second in the conference in both scoring (19.8 ppg) and free-throw percentage (88.9%), ninth in assists (3.6) and assist/turnover ratio (1.64) while adding 5.9 rebounds per game. Young was the only player in his conference to score in double-figures and play in every game for his team last season and scored 20 or more points 17 times.
Willard and assistant Tony Skinn pounced on Young after entering the portal and hosted him for an unofficial visit the same day that he entered the transfer portal. "He has been one of the most dynamic players in the country over the last few years,” Willard said of Young back on May 3. “We are excited to welcome him to our family. He is a terrific scorer with a great basketball IQ. He's a leader on the court who will be a major addition for us this coming season. It means a lot that he's coming home after a great career at DeMatha and with Team Takeover."
Maryland is awaiting the final decision from former Georgetown guard Donald Carey who, like Young, declared for the 2022 NBA Draft while entertaining all options in the transfer portal. Carey is also expected to return to college next season to give Maryland a veteran presence in the backcourt, while the Terps added former Seton Hall guard Jahari Long last week to stabilize the depth. Maryland also returns Ian Martinez and Ike Cornish in the backcourt next season.
