With the 2023 regular season officially complete, Maryland football has suffered its first departure of the offseason. Freshman safety Tamarcus Cooley has announced he plans to enter his name in the transfer portal ahead of the December 4 opening period. Cooley, who was ruled out for the final three games of the season, appeared in four games in 2023 after enrolling in College Park back in January. Cooley publicly flipped his commitment to Maryland on signing day to close the 2023 cycle, flipping his commitment from NC State. Ironically, NC State is a team to watch with Cooley now back available as Maryland shifts its attention to filling the safety spot. Maryland boasted experience in the secondary this season with dynamic duo Beau Brade and Dante Trader Jr. leading the way, while veteran Glen Miller was an integral piece in the rotation. Maryland also has one safety already in the fold with Evans (FL) four-star Brandon Jacob giving his pledge to the staff back in June, only to reaffirm his pledge months later to deter Miami (FL) from their flip efforts. Tamarcus Cooley recorded stats in two of his four games played this season, finishing wih four tackles and one solo. Maryland also returns Avantae Williams, Lavain Scruggs, Alex Moore and Tayvon Nelson in the secondary, while all eyes turn to the stay-or-go decisions on both sides of the ball for Maryland. Head coach Mike Locksley and the Terps will find out their bowl destination on Sunday after finishing the 2023 season 7-5 (4-5) with the program inching closer toward year six of the Locksley era.
