Fresh off portal commitment, Maryland involved with pair of portal wide receivers

Head coach Mike Locksley is fresh off the first portal commitment of the offseason after Old Dominion running back Trequan Jones went public with his decision, committing to Maryland over planned visits to Cincinnati and Michigan State with Louisville and Pittsburgh also working to finalize visits in the first days of officially entering the transfer portal.

Jones becomes the first domino with Maryland's offense looking to restock its skill position groups while addressing the offensive line ahead of 2026, and after watching the three starting receivers exhaust their eligibility, Maryland is also in the mix for a pair or portal targets coming off productive 2025 seasons.

Maryland extended offers to a pair of experienced wide receivers over the weekend in Akron WR Israel Polk and Middle Tennessee WR Nahzae Cox. Both are represented by the same agency that represents Jones.

Polk, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound wideout, has two years of eligibility remaining after combining for 726 receiving yards on 57 catches over the last two seasons, including eight touchdowns in 2025. The California native was one of six to be named an All-Conference selection in 2025 after becoming a second team All-MAC selection. His 33 catches ranked second on the team while also averaging 15.9 yards per catch, good enough for fourth-most in the conference. Polk's eight receiving touchdowns also ranked 21st nationally. No visit to Maryland has been set yet.

Cox, meanwhile, enters the portal after a productive season with Middle Tennessee, his lone season with the program. After posting 670 yards and six touchdowns on 34 catches during his first season at Fresno City College, Cox started in a pair of games and played in all but one to finish with 473 yards and five touchdowns on 40 catches with his 562 snaps leading the unit. He opened the 2025 season with three or more catches in nine consecutive games as he enters his final season of eligibility with a pair of Power Four suitors.

While a visit date with Maryland is in the process of being finalized, Cox will hit the road for an official visit to Oklahoma State beginning Monday, Jan. 5.
