Four-star Trent Perry after official visit to Maryland: "I can definitely see that being a great fit"

After cementing himself as a longtime 2026 target for Texas A&M prior to the early offseason coaching change, four-star guard Trent Perry knew Maryland was in line to receive an official visit. It didn’t take long for head coach Buzz Williams to reaffirm Perry’s offer after arriving in College Park with the longstanding ties made the Terps an immediate player. After wrapping up the summer circuit, Perry hit the road for the first of his four official visits when he made the trip to College Park beginning June 29.

While Perry knew he’d mesh with the staff, getting his first glimpse of the campus and facilities was the biggest question.

“My expectation, I just heard it was a great academic school and the school is nice. Nice campus, nice environment and it was everything everyone said. Great environment. Coaches were great as usual. The school is really nice and academics checked out too,” he told IBG. “I met an academic advisor, we sat down and had a meeting about how things would go and the type of situation I’d be in. I love seeing coach Buzz, coach [Steve Roccaforte], coach Wolf so it really felt like seeing family friends. It was really fun.”

After Perry spent ample time building his relationship with the staff, assistant Lyle Wolf spent time going over why the four-star would fit in the Terps’ system.

“I got to sit down with coach [Lyle] Wolf to break down my film and their film to see how I fit in. it’s a great situation. He’s a hard, aggressive, defensive coach so I really feel like that fits my play style,” he added. “Coach Wolf, when we were watching film they were saying I’m like Solomon Washington. They had a player at A&M two years ago, too, pretty similar. Hard defensive guys, spread the floor and just playing our roles.”

It also helped that in addition to staff familiarity, Perry had familiar faces already on Maryland’s roster. “I knew [George Turkson], Solo – basically all the guys who came from A&M.

Perry spent Wednesday evening around the players before watching Thursday’s practice then departing, leaving his two-day visit knowing Maryland is a school he can picture himself at.

“I can definitely see myself there. I’ve known coach Buzz and his staff for about three years so I think that’s been good. Obviously I had to see if the school itself was a good fit and I really like the campus and everything so I can definitely see that being a great fit.”

Perry previously set official visits to Texas A&M beginning August 29, Sacramento State beginning September 12 and TCU beginning September 19. Penn State, Oklahoma State and Vanderbilt were also in play for official visits, but Perry noted “those are probably my last three I’m going to go” with a fall commitment timeframe in mind.

“October, somewhere around there.”
