Emerging defensive star to wear 1 in 2025, Maryland football releases numbers & measurements for 2025 enrollees

With Glen Miller exhausting his eligibility and working to make the 53-man roster for the Kansas City Chiefs this fall, Maryland’s defense will have a new number one anchoring the defense with UMTerps releasing updated rosters for the 2025 season.

After wearing 16 for his first two seasons, linebacker Daniel Wingate has switched to one where he’ll look to captain a defense with just four returning starters yet quiet confidence in the projected starters.

After recording seven tackles and one TFL in 11 games in his first season with the program, Wingate was one of six players to earn most improved freshman award following the 2024 spring game before finishing third on the team in total tackles (50) and tied for third in TFLs (6.5) with Ruben Hyppolite, who became a fourth round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Wingate also earned the Tom Brown Leadership Award following the 2025 spring game alongside OL Isaiah Wright as the Pallotti (MD) product is expected to step into a feature role this fall after two offseasons filled with growing confidence in the former three-star signee.

Meanwhile, with the spring transfer additions already on campus and the bulk of the 2025 class expected to arrive in College Park this upcoming weekend, Maryland also released jersey numbers for the final wave of additions ahead of year seven for head coach Mike Locksley.
