Eight Terps recognized in Athlon Sports All-Big Ten Teams

Athlon Sports released their 2024 preseason all-Big Ten teams this week as Maryland saw eight players recognized, led by a trio of second-team selections. Full List Second team: WR Tai Felton, LB Ruben Hyppolite, KR Braeden Wisloski Third team: WR Kaden Prather Fourth team: RB Roman Hemby, DL Jordan Phillips, LB Donnell Brown, SAF Dante Trader Jr. This marks the second preseason second-team selection for Tai Felton after Phil Steele released his preseason all-conference teams earlier this month. The veteran Virginia speedster steps into a feature role in 2024 after a breakout 2023 season, but Felton won't be alone as Kaden Prather, who was named a third-team selection by Athlon but a second-team selection by Phil Steele, returns to lead the revamped wide receiver room into 2024. While the quarterback battle remains undecided with the competition always expected to continue into fall camp, offensive coordinator Josh Gattis has experienced weapons at his disposal as Felton and Prather enter the 2024 season as the top two returning wide receivers in average yards per catch. They won't be alone after veteran Roman Hemby, who was named the 39th-best draft-eligible running back, was named a fourth-team selection. Hemby led the team in 2023 with 680 rushing yards and four touchdowns, but Maryland struggled to find ways to efficiently run the ball through conference play as head coach Mike Locksley put an emphasis on changing that this past offense. After hiring a second offensive line assistant in Damian Wroblewski to bolster the trenches and bringing in former Iowa OC Brian Ferentz as an analyst to improve the run game, Hemby will look to be a big part of Maryland's improved balance on offense as he, Colby McDonald and second-year Nolan Ray lead the room this fall. As for Wisloski, Maryland thought they had a potential underrated game-changer when he signed as a three-star prospect in the 2023 class, and it didn't take long for the early enrollee to show that after he broke free for a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in his third college game. Wisloski became the first to do so since 2019 and recorded the longest return since Stefon Diggs in 2012 and while the Terps have ample options in the return game, Wisloski has a chance to build off a successful year one. Wisloski was previously named a second-team all-Big Ten selection by Phil Steele. Led by seven starters, fifth-year senior Ruben Hyppolite becomes a two-time preseason all-conference selection as the team's leading returning tackler to give the linebacker room its veteran presence alongside Caleb Wheatland, Daniel Wingate and Mike Harris. Outside linebacker Donnell Brown, who gave the Terps a reliable pass rusher in 2023, along with defensive lineman Jordan Phillips give the Terps more ammo in what's expected to be a strong front seven for Maryland in 2024. While Glen Miller looks to fill the shoes left vacant by Beau Brade after departing for the NFL, Dante Trader Jr. returns to stabilize the secondary and finish third on the team in tackles in 2023.
