Spalding DB Jayden Shipps set to commit on Friday

With official visits complete, commitment season is quickly approaching for the 2025 class with plans already set for a flurry of Maryland targets beginning this week. That includes a pair of local targets out of Severn (MD) in quarterback Malik Washington and cornerback Jayden Shipps.

Washington previously told IBG that he’s set to announce his commitment this upcoming Friday, June 28 at 1 PM with Maryland, UCF, Virginia Tech and Syracuse as his finalists.

As for Shipps, the three-star defensive back will also announce his commitment on Friday, June 28 at 1 PM among a final group of Maryland, NC State, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Shipps drew double-digit offers through his junior season as one of Spalding’s top defensive backs before hitting the road for a long, yet calculated recruiting trip that took him to over 12 schools through the spring. Maryland and NC State emerged as the two teams to watch in his recruitment though the relationships between Shipps and the Terps’ defensive staff – specifically co-DCs Brian Williams and Aazaar Abdul-Rahim – have carried weight into June.

“It’s the home team,” Shipps told IBG. “You really can’t go wrong and I grew up with coach [Brian] Williams. He’s been recruiting me since I was little. Coach Aazaar, he was my first offer at Boston College. So we have a lot of history at Maryland.”

Shipps made his way to College Park for an official visit beginning May 30 and was slated to officially visit NC State the following week, but opted to not follow through on his trip to Raleigh. Shipps returned to College Park the weekend of June 21 for an unofficial visit while teammates Malik Washington and defensive lineman Delmar White made their way to campus for their long-awaited official visits.

“I got to see a lot of my friends, a lot of my teammates – old teammates. I saw all the coaches again as well, me and them are all pretty tight.”

Jayden Shipps is rated a three-star prospect and an 87 overall by On3, checking in as the 23rd-best prospect in Maryland.
