Diggy Coit shines, Maryland men's basketball picks up first Big Ten win in vs. Penn State

Sunday marked the latest episode of the Diggy Coit show after leading Maryland to a win at home.

The losing streak is over after Maryland picked up a 96-73 win vs. Penn State, marking the first Big Ten win in seven games while snapping a four-game losing streak.

Coit finished with 43 points, now tied with Al Bunge’s record from 1960 for the second-most in program history. He accounted for 11 of the team’s first 16 points and 16 of the first 28 points while entering halftime with 30 points on 10-of-14 shooting and 6-of-8 from three.

Penn State would open on a 7-2 run before Coit teamed up with Elijah Saunders to give Maryland its first lead just over three minutes into the game - a lead they never gave back.

As fans have become accustomed to through the first half of the season, Coit got hot and never looked back with his offense serving as the jumpstarted the Terps’ offense needed. His third and-one opportunity in the game with just nine minutes left in the first half gave Maryland its first double digit lead of conference play, before Darius Adams converted at the rim on the ensuing possession to force Penn State to call timeout with Maryland stretching its lead to 12 points - its largest lead during conference play.

That lead ballooned to as many as 21 points with Maryland shooting nearly 70% from three heading into the under four timeout in the first half, but Coit’s hot shooting kept that going into halftime after Darius Adams’ off-balanced three as time expired capped off a 10-0 run, giving the Terps a 30-point lead at the break.

Maryland’s 56 points at halftime marked a program record in a Big Ten regular season game.

Penn State would open the second half on a 19-4 run through the first six minutes, and coupled with a six minute drought without a field goal, Maryland would watch its lead dwindle to nearly single digits before five straight points from Andre Mills gave the offense life.

Diggy Coit’s first points of the second half came on another and-one opportunity just ahead of nine minutes remaining and despite not converting the three-point play, Solomon Washington’s offensive rebound finished off the second-chance opportunity with a dunk on Coit’s assist. Elijah Saunders would keep the crowd on its feet after turning a turnover into another and-one opportunity, letting Maryland grow its lead back to 17 points.

Maryland would maintain a double digit lead the rest of the way as Coit approached resetting the single season scoring record.

Maryland will now hit the road for the first of two road games against top-15 teams with a 7 PM tipoff against 13th-ranked Illinois on Wednesday then a noon tipoff against 12th-ranked Michigan State on Saturday.
