Maryland football is approaching the 100 day mark until the Aug. 30 season opener vs. Florida Atlantic and first-year head coach Zach Kittley, and head coach Mike Locksley entering arguably his most important season since taking over the program.
After three consecutive bowl appearances – and wins – heading into year six, Maryland stumbled into a 1-8 finish in Big Ten play featuring several deflating home losses. With the page turned to the 2025 season months ago and spring ball wrapped up for nearly one month, Maryland will look to become the bounceback team in the Big Ten. They’ll also have a chance to silence the growing critics with sportsbooks releasing what appears to be the consensus win projection in 2025.
FanDuel, BetMGM and DraftKings all list Maryland football’s projected win total in 2025 at 4.5 with the best odds for the over on FanDuel (-115) compared to BetMGM (-120) and DraftKings (-130). Maryland’s win total is also the second-lowest in the Big Ten with both Northwestern and Purdue tied with 3.5 wins.
While Maryland enters the fall with new faces at the biggest positions of need, its preseason projection is the lowest of the Mike Locksley era, despite just three projected top-25 teams on the schedule in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.
With former NFL assistants Pep Hamilton and Ted Monachino taking over as offensive and defensive coordinators, Maryland was active through both transfer portal windows to add needed experience in the trenches. Locksley and his staff added Rahtrel Perry and Carlos Moore Jr. to bolster the offensive side of the trenches as potential starters, while Eyan Thomas and Cam Rice anchor five additions along the defensive line in 2025. While Dontay Joyner and Jamare Glasker show early signs of upgrading the top of the cornerback room while Trey Reddick, Daniel Wingate and Jalen Huskey have emerged as playmakers on defense, all eyes are on the quarterback battle as Malik Washington, former blue-chip quarterback and early fan favorite, looks to become the first Maryland freshman quarterback to start a game since Kasim Hill in 2018.
“Just the speed of it, slowing down for them. To see the speed of the game and the timing, it's a little different,” head coach Mike Locksley said of his freshman quarterback during spring ball. “He's dealing with a different kind of pass rusher, a different kind of corner, windows become tighter where accuracy becomes critical, but he's been prepared for those.”
After wrapping up non-conference play against FAU, Northern Illinois and Towson, Maryland will shift its attention to the first of two games featuring a former Terp with QB Billy Edwards Jr. suiting up for the Badgers in Madison on Sept. 20. Maryland will also host Washington and Nebraska in October while traveling to UCLA on Oct. 18, marking the first matchup between the now Big Ten foes since 1955.
After hosting a pair of former Terps when Indiana comes to town for the homecoming game on Nov. 1, Maryland will look to do what it did just once in 2025 with road games against Rutgers, Illinois and Michigan State on the schedule. Michigan also heads to College Park on Nov. 22 as Maryland looks for its first win against them since the program’s first season in the Big Ten.
