Hillsborough (FL) inside linebacker Kellen Wiley made his first trip to College Park for his official visit last weekend, giving the Terps a chance to cement themselves as a player in his recruitment. “It felt like home. A lot of people that I know were there. The players, I got along with them well. The coaches, they showed me a good time. They all showed me a good time,” Wiley told IBG. “I met with Daniel Wingate, he was my host, but the players I met – Wingate, – I met like three or four players and they were all real cool, down to earth. Basically showing me college life and how they adjusted away from home.” Assistant Kevin Sumlin has led the way with the 6-foot-4, 210-pound MIKE target as Wiley said the Terps are the school pushing the hardest in his recruitment to-date. “He’s been doing a great job since day one. He’s been doing a great job recruiting me, showing me love, showing me around, putting me in position with the best people that I can get along with and fit well with me when I was there.” While his knowledge about his potential fit was limited heading into the visit, his one-on-one time with position coach, Lance Thompson, gave him a chance to see how he can help reload the position. “They said they’re losing a guy or two inside so we went over the scheme. I got a chance to learn at least two or three of their defenses. Coach Lance Thompson, he did a great job making it to where I understand the defense in a short amount of time.” Wiley has already wrapped up an official visit to Toledo and will head to Bowling Green this upcoming weekend, but there’s a reason he’s stayed true to the visit plans he set months before Power Four schools jumped into the mix. “Only reason I’m going to Bowling Green is because sometime during the school year, I set up the visit. After that, I heard from multiple schools, better schools I’d say, but I gave them my word so I wasn’t going to go back on it.” Bowling Green and Maryland are joined by Syracuse and Indiana in Wiley’s top group, but they aren't alone after Michigan State jumped into the mix on Wednesday while Florida State has “been hitting me up a lot” through June. While Indiana and the ‘Noles are pushing for a fall official visit, Wiley doesn’t expect his recruitment to drag until then. “Probably before the season starts, for sure, probably August. I’m about to post my top ten next week or two.” And after his first visit to Maryland, Wiley has the Terps firmly in his top group. “Definitely in my top five right now. That’s really the best visit I’ve been on so that’s a real big plus.” Kellen Wiley is not yet rated by On3.
