Maryland men’s basketball ends the regular season as a two-seed in the final Big Ten standings, their highest finish since winning a share of the regular season title in 2019-20. Maryland’s 24 wins are currently the program’s best since the 2019-20 season.
This marks the second time that Maryland has drawn a two-seed since joining the Big Ten in 2014-15.
Maryland will suit back up on Friday at 6:30 PM EST against the winner of Illinois and Ohio State-Iowa. Maryland is 2-3 all-time in the quarterfinals and will look to reach the Big Ten semifinals for the first time since 2016.
Maryland’s lone matchup against the Illini was back on Jan. 23 when the Terps secured their 91-70 win in Champaign, the road win that sparked a season turnaround in year three of the Kevin Willard era.
Maryland split its two matchups against the Buckeyes with the home team winning both games, though the Terps will have a chance to avenge Bruce Thornton’s game-winning three that served as the first of three one-possession losses in 2025. Maryland is 2-0 against Nebraska this season with both wins by a combined 11 points with Willard 4-2 all-time against the Huskers.
With six days in between games, head coach Kevin Willard noted the Terps “have not been good coming off byes” as they look to shift their focus toward postseason play.
“Thanks a lot, appreciate it. I was going to go have a beer but now I’m going to switch to whiskey,” Willard jokingly said on Saturday. “Going out west was, we had four days off because of the New York trip so that was a really – and then going out west. And I thought we played pretty good going into Ohio State, we just missed our free throws. We would’ve won at Ohio State if we made our free throws. I think we’re going to take, technically, two days off but it won’t be a full two days. It’ll be like a day and a half.”
“We have a couple days off, and we haven't had, I guess, the best record of coming off, a long string of off days,” senior forward Jordan Geronimo added. “But we're aware of it. We're going to plan accordingly and make sure when we come into this next important game, we're going to be ready to fight.”
