Maryland football now has its fifth transfer portal commit of the offseason after former Austin Peay defensive back Gavin Edwards announced his transfer to the program.
Edwards, a 6-foot, 180-pound sophomore originally out of St. Stephen, SC, committed to Maryland coming off his official visit and picked the Terps over Michigan State. Iowa also hosted Edwards before materializing into a distant third as Ball State, Old Dominion, East Carolina, Tulsa and Wake Forest extended offers. Edwards took an official visit to Maryland beginning April 25 and made his decision on April 27 before announcing shortly after.
Edwards joins the program filling a key need where he can line up at safety, but is also an immediate candidate to step in as a nickel corner as cornerbacks coach Aazaar Abdul-Rahim and safeties coach James Thomas to solidify the secondary. Maryland previously signed Dontay Joyner (Arkansas State) and Jamare Glasker (Wake Forest) to round out the cornerback room as Edwards becomes one of the final pieces to the Terps’ secondary in 2025.
In eight games at North Greenville with his production coming in his seven appearances in 2024, Edwards totaled six pass deflections and 29 total tackles and joins the program with three years to play three. Edwards then transferred to Austin Peay in January before reentering the transfer portal during the spring, quickly materializing into a coveted Power Four portal target.
Edwards joins DT Cam Rice, DL Edwin Moore, DL Joel Starlings and DL Sedrick Smith as portal commits for Maryland football in the spring window, while nine of the ten transfers signed in December remain with the program.
Edwards joins the program with three years of eligibility remaining, a common trait among Maryland’s newest portal additions with Cam Rice the lone new face without multiple years of eligibility remaining.
