'23 Florida Receiver Impressed with Camp, Visit at Maryland

June has been a busy month for 2023 prospects as they make their way onto campus for camps and individual workouts. This week gave Satellite (FL) three-star wide receiver Eddie Combs an opportunity to do so at Maryland after the staff watched him camp at the Florida State mega camp earlier this month. The 6-foot, 165-pound receiver got a chance to take in drills in front of wide receiver coach Zohn Burden as Combs was impressed with his performance.

“I think I did pretty well. I got to work with coach Zohn a lot and coach Miller and I think it was pretty well run. Got to see the facility, got to see the practice field, got to walk around College Park a little bit so I think it went pretty well,” he told Inside the Black and Gold. Combs got a chance to spend more time with the coaching staff as he liked what he saw. “I think it went really well. I like their coaching staff, especially coach Zohn. Coach Zohn is a very get things done type of guy, very straight to the point. He likes everything nice and clean so I like that kind of coaching style.”

Maryland was one of several Power Five schools to offer in May as Louisville, Kentucky, West Virginia, Penn State, Arkansas, and Ole Miss also jumped into the ring, but Combs was excited to check out Maryland given that it’s where his father attended school. With a direct connection to the program and family still within Maryland, Combs knows he’ll be back. “I was born in Baltimore so my dad definitely helped kind of explain the culture and history of Maryland because we have such big ties there. I used to dream about going to Maryland.” Tight end coach Mike Miller has helped the Terps maintain a growing presence in Florida as Combs is enjoying the early stages of their relationship.

“It was my second time meeting coach Miller, I met him down at the FSU camp and I got to really connect with him at Maryland and have conversations with him and learn who he is, learn his coaching style, and got really good pointers. Overall it was a great experience and great hospitality.” Tuesday’s camp also gave him an opportunity to take in a tour of the campus and the new facilities.

“I thought it was amazing. Everything I saw on Twitter, it lived up to the hype. Ever since they moved into the new facility, I’ve seen it on Twitter but didn’t see too much because I wanted to see it in person so seeing it in person was definitely worth the wait.”

Combs will camp at Florida on Friday and possibly Miami on Saturday as he breaks down what he’s able to flash in person. “I think a lot of coaches value my speed a lot. I like to see myself as a quicker receiver and especially at these camps, being able to beat press coverage and outrun the defender has definitely gotten the eye of all these coaches because they’ve watched it on film but now that they know how fast these guys are, they can really compare speeds. I think they also like me as a person, I’ve got to meet all of them and definitely got some good connections with them.”

As a sophomore, Combs was an All-Division 2 Brevard selection as a safety.

Combs is rated a three-star prospect and an 86 overall by 247Sports, sitting as the 75th-best prospect in Florida.
