2027 five-star set to visit for Maryland men's basketball's next home game

Maryland men's basketball is days removed from a historic loss and is staring at their third losing season in five years, but head coach Buzz Williams will look to turn his squad around when they return to College Park next Sunday, Feb. 1 to host Purdue for a 1 PM tipoff. And they'll do so with a marquee visitor in College Park.

2027 five-star Obinna Ekezie Jr. will visit Maryland for the Purdue game next weekend, marking his first visit since Buzz Williams was named head coach.

Maryland officially re-offered in early June and has already made the 7-footer a priority with assistant Aki Collins teaming up with head coach Buzz Williams, who has remained active in the staff's pursuit.

”I have a great relationship with them as well. I mostly speak with Coach [Aki] Collins, but the full staff were here to see me during the fall. We are in contact often,” Ekezie Jr. told StockRisers earlier this month.

Of course, Ekezie is also a legacy target given his father is Obinna Ekezie, who played four seasons at Maryland before being drafed in 1999 and spending eight seasons in the NBA across five teams.

Ekezie also enters the visit as a 2026 reclass candidate, though plans on a finalized decision - or recruitment timeline - have yet to materialize with the 2025-26 season already halfway over. Duke, Arkansas, Michigan, Kentucky and North Carolina are among the long list of schools who are also in pursuit while Ekezie also unofficially visited Ohio State at the beginning of the college basketball season.

After inking the second-highest recruit in program history after Baba Oladotun committed to Maryland over Georgetown, all eyes will turn to whether head coach Buzz Williams can strike again with a coveted target with Okezie Jr. in position to become the highest-rated commit in program history.
