Maryland men’s lacrosse hosts Army to begin NCAA Tournament run

Maryland men’s lacrosse drew a fourth seed in Sunday night’s selection show and will begin their postseason run against Army on Saturday, May 13 at 7:30 PM at SECU Stadium, which will be televised on ESPNU.

After securing its NCAA-best 20th consecutive ten-win season, Maryland’s bid marks the 45th NCAA Tournament appearance and NCAA-best 20th straight. Head coach John Tillman is 28-9 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, which currently ranks sixth all-time among coaches in tournament wins.

Army wrapped up the regular season 10-3 before defeating Lehigh then Loyola (MD) to win the Patriot League, drawing an auto-bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Maryland, meanwhile, saw their Big Ten Tournament run end on Saturday night after a deflating loss to Michigan in the championship game.

The game started out somewhat even but once the start of the second quarter came around, it was all Michigan.

Michigan scored the first goal four minutes into the game to kick things off before Braden Erksa responded to even the game. Michigan would then score once again before Eric Spanos would then tie it right back up. Michigan would then go on a three goal run to take a 5-2 lead, but with just five seconds left in the quarter, Spanos would score his second goal of the game to draw it within two at the end of the first quarter.

To start the second quarter, it was Michigan that would draw first blood, but Spanos would score his third goal of the day to give him a hat trick to draw the lead back within two. Michigan would go on yet another log run, this time four goals in a row to make it a six goal game. The Terps offense was struggling to get anything going with Spanos being the lone bright spot so far. The Wolverines would have a 10-4 lead heading into the half with their offense scoring at will through the first half.

Maryland opened the second half with a goal from Erksa, but it’d be the last for the game as the Wolverines’ defense swarmed before eventually draining the clock. Maryland only allowed another four goals over the final 28 minutes of the game, making the final score 14-5. Brian Ruppel finished the game with eight saves while Luke Wierman finished the game going 10-20 from the face-off.
