Maryland football holds edge for in-state athlete after latest visit

Oakdale (MD) three-star athlete Evan Austin has long had Maryland in his top group and has made himself a familiar face in College Park through his recruitment, and his plans to attend Maryland’s spring game last weekend came to fruition as he and his family made the trip to campus.

“I came early. I got to talk to coach [Gunter] Brewer for a while then I went on the field, hung out, got a chance to eat,” Austin told IBG. “I love being down there every time I go. It’s always good so I always have a good time, it was fun to watch the game. And I got to sit down with coach Brewer for a little bit after too.”

Former assistant Mike Miller once led the way for the 6-foot, 160-pound athlete but Gunter Brewer has picked up full-time recruiting efforts as both the area and position coach after trekking through Oakdale on Monday.

“He’s been very good. I talk to him often,” Austin said of Brewer. “Our relationship has always been really good but I’ve been talking with him a lot lately. We talk often on the phone, we text too, so we have a really good relationship.”

Temple, Boston College, Indiana and West Virginia are in the mix but there’s little doubt about who holds the edge early on.

“I feel like Maryland is my number one right now,” he added. “It’s Maryland and I’m from here. Just the connections I’ve built, I’ve been talking to Maryland for a long time now and they’ve stayed consistent with me, just making sure we have a good connection. And I just love being down there, so it’s my top right now.”

Evan Austin lined up as a quarterback and posted 3,100 total yards and 33 touchdowns and was named All-County player of the year as a junior.

Evan Austin is also rated a three-star prospect and an 87 overall by On3.
