Maryland in the mix for OV after Penn. WR picks up offer on visit

After months of tracking Central Catholic (PA) athlete Brad Gompers, the 6-foot-4.5, 205-pound athlete made the trip to College Park for Thursday’s practice before Maryland became the latest Big Ten school to join the mix, joining Rutgers, Northwestern, Indiana and Michigan State among others.

Safeties coach Zac Spavital has led the way heading into the spring as the two sides have gradually built their relationship, and while the Terps are working on a return visit, they’ve continued to leave the door open on where the two-way starter will line up at the next level.

“I talked with coach Spav and also coach [Kevin] Sumlin and coach James Thomas, the outside linebackers coach. They’re recruiting me at both linebacker and tight end, they haven’t set a position yet and in the coming months, they’ll figure that out,” Gompers added. “I’m not sure what I’m going to play in college yet, I’ll have to decide that eventually. I like it when some of these schools keep it open for me to decide and not pigeonholing me into a spot.”

That’s nothing new for Gompers, who grew up playing both sides of the ball and admittedly doesn’t have a strong preference for one position. While where Gompers lines up is a question the staff will look to answer this summer in his recruitment, the relationship between him and Spavital has put the Terps in contention for an official visit. Gampers is working on dates to officially visit Duke, Michigan State and Penn State in June as Maryland moves to finalize a return visit.

“I talk with coach Spav the most. We talk on the phone here and there and he came up to see me a while back when I played basketball. It’s a great school so I’m excited to get that offer. They talked about an official visit later this summer so we’ll get that worked out, and probably take one in early June. They’re definitely in my priority schools now.”

After missing the bulk of his junior season due to a broken collarbone, Gompers returned for the playoffs to help Central Catholic into the WPIAL title game, a game he posted 17 tackles and a defensive touchdown, before shifting over to basketball season.
