Maryland baseball set for Big Ten Tournament rematch vs. Nebraska

After another off day, Maryland baseball will now prepare for a rematch against Nebraska in the first of two chances for the Terps to reach the championship game in the Big Ten Tournament.

Maryland, of course, will look to build off Thursday’s win after Nick Lorusso’s walk-off home run in the tenth inning handed the Huskers a 2-1 loss. “I was lucky enough to see an elevated slider and put it in play,” Lorusso said after his game-winning hit.

After turning to the bullpen in the first inning, Maryland allowed just four hits and one run in Thursday’s win as its pitching turned the tide to keep the Terps in the game until the bats warmed up.

“Really proud of our arms. They’ve taken a little bit of flack this year,” Maryland head coach Rob Vaughn said following Thursday’s win. “We’ve got writers at home talking about how they give up ten runs every game and we have to score more and for them to come out when it really matters, when the season kind of hangs into balance, and keep us in there and give us a chance. I’m really proud of the toughness and coach [Mike] Morrison and coach [Anthony] Papio to develop that mentality with those guys.”

Nebraska kept their season alive after defeating Michigan State 4-0 on Friday afternoon after starting pitcher Will Walsh allowed just four hits in a complete game.

“Everybody wants to know how are you ever going to bounce back from tough losses? You can’t be sad about it. That’s about the best way I can put it,” Nebraska head coach Will Bolt said following Friday’s win. “It’s going to hurt for a night and you’re not going to show up the next day down in the dumps because you lost a game. That’s just not the way baseball works and if you do that, it’s going to be a short stay in the tournament and these guys are here to win a championship, so I had no doubt that we were going to show up and compete tonight and we did that.”
