Local DB raves about bond with lead recruiter after latest visit

This weekend gave Maryland a chance to bring in a long list of local visitors to campus and for North Caroline (MD) cornerback Zymear Smith, the chance to meet his new position coach didn’t disappoint.

“He’s that guy. I want to be around that type of coach,” Smith told IBG. “We definitely connected off the jump. It’s just good to put a face to the name. We were cooling all day. He’s the truth. He’s not going to bullshit you. He’s going to tell you right from wrong and the way he wants it done. That’s the type of coaches [that] I want to be around, man.”

Smith spent the day around the facilities with his mentor and Abdul-Rahim before making their way to the Xfinity Center to watch Maryland’s home game vs. Michigan State. Sunday’s visit marked his second visit for a basketball game, and while the Terps didn’t come out on top, the chance to spend time with his lead recruiter puts Maryland in the top group for Smith moving forward.

“They have everything I’m looking for. And it’s my hometown. I don’t have to go anywhere. It’s right in front of my face, right in my backyard.”

Smith’s post-visit feedback aligns with his stance on Maryland heading into the weekend, where he told IBG that Maryland was “top two and not two” after becoming a consistent target since the coaching change.

Texas, South Carolina, Georgia and Kentucky are among the early verbal offers for the 5-foot-10 cornerback, and Smith was at Penn State on Saturday as he compared his visits to the two Big Ten programs.

“When I went to Maryland, every coach knew who I was. It was a warm welcome there.”

The prime cornerback target is expected to visit Miami (FL) this upcoming weekend as a long list of DMV targets make their way to Orlando for a 7-on-7 tournament, then will head to West Virginia for a visit on Feb. 3. Maryland, meanwhile, is expected to watch Smith’s basketball game against Kent Island on Thursday.

Zymear Smith is not yet rated by On3, but is rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.
