Jahmir Young’s Top Five Games as a Terp

Jahmir Young was only a Terp for two brief seasons. Despite that, he has built himself quite a legacy in Maryland basketball putting up two of the greatest seasons that a Maryland point guard has ever seen. While the first season had much better results overall than the second, Young’s impact on this program will be felt for a long time, especially after becoming the first Terp to earn All-Big Ten First Team Honors since Jalen Smith in 2020. With that in mind, let’s look at some of the best games of Jahmir Young’s time as a Terp.

Honorable Mention: Northwestern 69, Maryland 67 – January 17, 2024

This game probably would’ve cracked the list if the Terps had won it, but because Maryland fell short, we’ll give it an Honorable Mention. It was a close game throughout and a phenomenal point guard battle between Jahmir and Boo Buie. In a game Maryland really needed to have in order to get back in the Big Ten Standings, Jahmir did all he could scoring 36, a career best in Big Ten play, including a crazy three pointer to give Maryland a late one-point lead. But ultimately, it was not enough as Maryland dropped one of many close games in conference play in the 2023-2024 season.

5. Maryland 69, Iowa 67 – January 24, 2024

One of the rare bright spots of the 2023-24 season was the Terps’ first-ever sweep of the Iowa Hawkeyes since joining the Big Ten a decade ago. The Terps trailed for a vast majority of the first matchup in Iowa City, as Iowa led 63-57 with just over four minutes remaining. That was when Jahmir too With 1:24 left and the Terps down by 1, Jahmir hit a 3 to give Maryland a one point lead. He provided another three to give Maryland a 67-65 lead, before breaking a 67-67 tie with a drive to the bucket in the final seconds to give the Terps the win.

4. Maryland 67, West Virginia 65 (2023 NCAA Tournament Second Round) – March 16, 2023

It’s quite a shame that Jahmir was only able to win one NCAA tournament game in his time at Maryland. But the game that he won sure was a memorable one. The Terps got off to a dreadful start, trailing 19-6 at the 10-minute mark of the first half. From that point, Maryland went on a 24-9 run to take a 30-28 lead, and led by two at half. The Terps would extend their lead to 7 in the second half, but the Mountaineers came back to take the lead again. Jahmir went 3/4 from the free throw line in the last 90 seconds, and that was just enough for the Terps to squeak by and advance to the next round. Jahmir finished his only tournament win at Maryland with 10 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists.

3. Maryland 68, #3 Purdue 54 – February 17, 2023

It’s the game that defined the first year of the Kevin Willard era, and a game that Maryland fans will not forget. With Zach Edey and the #3 Boilermakers coming to town, it was gonna take a team effort and a raucous crowd to pull the upset, and luckily for Maryland, they got both. The Terps’ played solid in the first half but still trailed by three at the break. The second half, however, was an entirely different story. Maryland went on a stunning 29-4 run in the second half to pull away from Purdue.

The game was one of the most memorable ones since the Terps have joined the Big Ten, and that 29-4 run is one of the most iconic runs to ever take place in the XFINITY Center.

2. Maryland 69, UCLA 60 – December 22, 2023

The best individual game performance of Jahmir Young’s Maryland career came on the West Coast in a win over UCLA. After the Bruins had thrashed Maryland the previous year in College Park, Jahmir was determined to come out and make amends, and did he ever. In Kevin Willard’s 300th career win, the Terps started off scorching hot leading by 15 at half with Jahmir dropping 23 in the first half. UCLA made it very uncomfortable in the second half cutting the lead to two with five minutes left, but the Terps pulled away winning by 9, thanks to 14 more in the second half by Jahmir, for a total of 37 points, a career-high. Young’s performance was the 4th most points scored by a Terp in a true road game in program history and was indicative of how easily he can take a game over.

1. #22 Maryland 71, #16 Illinois 66

One of the most anticipated games of Jahmir’s career lived up to all the hype and then some. The Terps were ranked in the AP Poll, and awaited #16 Illinois for the Big Ten Home Opener. It was a massive game for Maryland after a really good start to non-conference play. In front of a sold-out gold rush crowd, Jahmir had 24 points including the dagger step-back three late in the second half to secure the win for Maryland.

Despite rocky results in only two seasons, Jahmir showed time and time again why he should have the ball in his hands. He is the latest DMV point guard to make a significant impact on this basketball program, and he will be remembered for a long time around College Park.
