QB Malik Washington talks two Big Ten trips, visit plans, timeline

Spalding (MD) composite four-star QB Malik Washington hit the road for a pair of unofficial visits this week, first to Penn State on Tuesday then Maryland on Wednesday.

Washington’s trip to State College him Washington a chance to meet new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki. “It was my first time meeting him. It was pretty much watch practice, didn’t get to talk too much,” Washington said. He’s in the process of scheduling his official visit to Penn State as he maps out his eventual visit schedule.

“That’s what we’re trying to do now. They sent me over the dates, I’m looking over it with my family to try and figure out when I’m going to do it.”

The next day, Washington spent the evening inside Jones-Hill House where he got a chance to reconnect with both lead recruiters and coordinators, Josh Gattis and Brian Williams, along with head coach Mike Locksley.

“We got to talk a good amount, sit down and watch some ball. That was mainly it. Coach Locks was up there too so I got to talk with him for a good amount too,” he added. “I saw some of the dudes who were playing in the chess tournament.”

Washington could make his way back to College Park in two weeks. For now, he’s scheduled to unofficially visit UCF on March 25 and “depending on what time I get back,” he’ll be back at Maryland for the first practice of spring ball the next day with teammate and cornerback target Jayden Shipps.

After that, Washington will head to Virginia Tech on April 1 then Tennessee on April 2. His trips to Orlando and Knoxville will mark his first time checking out the Knights and Vols in-person with both schools only recently entering the mix.

“Just get a feel, see how it is down there and see what they’re talking about,” he added.

While Washington came out of his unofficial visit to Maryland without an official visit date set, his timeline has shifted as he works to get to all his finalists. “I pushed it back a little bit just because the [official visit] dates are mainly in June so I’ll probably have to push it back a little bit.”

Virginia Tech is the lone school to have an official visit set with the Spalding two-sport athlete set to visit Blacksburg beginning April 12, but when will he get to College Park?

“Maryland is probably going to be my last official.”

With Washington’s commitment timeline now extending into June, Maryland has a chance to bring him in the weekend of June 21 alongside four-star safety Messiah Delhomme, four-star OL Jaylen Gilchrist, four-star cornerback Tariq Hayer and Jayden Shipps as Gattis, Williams and Locksley look to close on one of their top overall targets.

Malik Washington is rated a three-star prospect and an 89 overall by On3, sitting as the ninth-best in-state prospect.
