Jahmari Powell-Wonson breaks down his commitment to Maryland

The plan wasn’t for Baltimore City (MD) three-star wide receiver Jahmari Powell-Wonson to but going public with a pledge that materialized a mere few hours before, but after connecting with head coach Mike Locksley, the in-state product became the fifth commitment in the 2024 class.

The 6-foot-2 receiver publicly took the next step in his recruitment last month after including Maryland in his top seven alongside Boston College, Charlotte, Liberty, Old Dominion, Pitt and Virginia Tech but Powell-Wonson moved forward with his pledge after connecting with his primary recruiters.

“Nobody was expecting it,” Powell-Wonson told IBG. Both assistants, Gunter Brewer and Lance Thompson, were by Baltimore City (MD) earlier this week as they’ve kept close tabs on the local product. “It was great. They speak a lot of truth, and their truth will benefit me through life, not just sports. My career, getting my degree. And just great coaches who’ve been around the game for some years so I can’t go wrong with home.”

Enjoying a consistent pursuit from Brewer only helped elevate the Terps’ chances with Powell-Wonson. “Coach Brewer, he texts me every hour. I wouldn’t be surprised if he texts me now. He didn’t take his foot off the gas. He recruited me hard and heavy so I appreciate him for acknowledging my talent and me as a person. I can’t wait to get hands-on with home very day because in college, I’ll spend more time with him than anyone so I definitely feel comfortable with him and trusting the process.”

Powell-Wonson also briefly spoke with head coach Mike Locksley in between meetings as the two sides are set to reconnect later this evening. But the presence of Tyrese Chambers, another Baltimore product who wrapped up his first spring with the program, also gave Powell-Wonson another familiar face to get feedback from. “He speaks highly of Maryland. He recently won MVP for the spring game so being home, especially being from Baltimore, is a blessing. Especially having the opportunity. He told me to go where I feel wanted and Maryland was definitely that school.

Powell-Wonson also returned to campus for spring practice and took note of the tempo and convenience for his family. “Things are quick at the next level. The way how they pace themselves. It’s also most convenient for my family, just being close to home so I’d definitely say that the program is 100% thorough.”

Jahmari Powell-Wonson is set to officially visit Maryland the weekend of June 23.

Jahmari Powell-Wonson is not yet rated by On3 but is an 86 overall and rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports.
