Maryland wrapped up their third practice of spring ball on Saturday with a long list of visitors in attendance including four-stars Jalylen Gilchrist and Bryce Jenkins, Virginia three-star athlete Mathew Outten and DeMatha three-star linebacker Noah Chambers. Warwick (VA) four-star safety Messiah Delhomme also made the trip to College Park with his parents to get a closer look into the football side of the program.
Delhomme, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound athlete, has showcased his big play ability on offense and special teams in high school but the Virginia four-star has been a safety for Maryland. The Virginia native made his way to campus in the fall for the Illinois game as the Terps stayed consistent in his recruitment through his junior year into the offseason. On Saturday, Delhomme got a chance to watch how the staff sees him fitting into the Terps’ defense.
“They told me to watch number 12 [Dante Trader Jr.],” Delhomme told IBG. “It’s definitely a good scheme I fit into. I was mainly watching the safeties get at it then after that I was watching them against the running backs and receivers.”
After practice, he got a chance to connect with Anthony Reddick, who grew close to Delhomme back in high school. “I got a chance to talk with him for a bit. We know each other because he’s from the same area I’m from.” Running backs coach Latrell Scott has made Delhomme a priority so far and the combo of consistent interest and fit in the Terps’ defense has kept Maryland in the top group.
“Coach [Latrell] Scott, all the coaches really. They’ve been really good about keeping up with me and making me a priority for them.”
Delhomme added he still has four official visits set beginning with Virginia Tech (May 31), Virginia (June 7) and Ohio State (June 14) before returning to Maryland the weekend of June 21. With academics a priority as Delhomme takes a 3.64 GPA into the end of his junior year, the four-star safety has a clear idea of what he wants to look into during his return visit after getting a glimpse into the football side.
“I didn’t get to see the dorms and I didn’t get to talk to academics because I was at practice so that’s the stuff I want to ask about. That’s big for me.”
Prior to his official visits, Delhomme is set to unofficially visit Ohio State on Thursday and is working on finalizing a visit to Syracuse this month. The four-star safety will look to make his commitment after his June official visits.
Messiah Delhomme is rated a four-star prospect and a 90 overall by On3, sitting as the eighth-best prospect in Virginia.
