Recruiting

Four-star edge rusher sets two officials, including Maryland

Flowers (MD) four-star defensive end Obinna Onwuka took the next step in his recruitment after dropping a top seven with Boston College, Maryland, Memphis, Penn State, USC, Virginia Tech and West Virginia still in the mix. And with spring break right around the corner, Onwuka will head west to check on one of his top schools.

“I’m going with my mom and brother to USC. That’s probably the only plan for me for spring break,” Onwuka told IBG. “I’d say the culture. I want to check that out, but other than that, that’s it. Just want to check it out for myself.”

It’ll be his first time checking on the Trojans with assistant Roy Manning spearheading DMV recruiting this cycle. Onwuka, meanwhile, has a pair of official visits scheduled for the summer.

“West Virginia and Maryland, that’s it for now. I’ll be there June 4 for Maryland then for West Virginia, I think it’s the June 28 visit,” Onwuka added.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound edge rusher visited Maryland back on March 7 where he, linebacker Kendric Council, offensive tackle Mike Williams and defensive end Herb Gray were able to sit down with the staff and watch offseason conditioning. But for Onwuka, it was Elijah Brooks who once led his recruitment as outside linebacker coach James Thomas has since picked things up. With his potential position coach now recruiting him, has the coaching departure changed anything?

“He’s a great dude but I still look at both schools the same, so it doesn’t change anything for me,” Onwuka added. “[Thomas] is a great guy. We’ve just been talking it out. He talked to me about my size. I can be a linebacker, versatile, play the edge.”

Onwuka shares what sticks out about the hometown team. “It’s very close to home. The culture is great, the family is great. I do want to be close to home, so I get that feeling at Maryland.”

Onwuka is rated a four-star prospect and a 90 overall by On3, sitting as the sixth-best prospect in Maryland.
