With the transfer portal officially closed, head coach Kevin Willard still has one scholarship to fill as he and the staff are in the final stages of cementing the roster for the 2024-25 season. With four transfers and a pair of high school recruits already signed, they’ll get a crack at one transfer target with former Clemson guard Alex Hemenway set to visit Maryland next week.
Hemenway, a 6-foot-4 guard originally from Indiana, will visit Maryland on May 9, a source confirmed to IBG. Hemenway is also set to visit Vanderbilt this weekend while a potential trip to Indiana is on the table for May 14, giving the former ACC guard a chance to return home.
With three-point shooting a dire concern for Maryland after fans watched the 2023-24 team struggle to shoot inside and out, Hemenway helps address that need after shooting over 44% from the field and nearly 43% from three at Clemson. Hemenway spent five seasons with the Tigers, starting in 25 games and appearing in 70 more while averaging 5.3 points per game through his career. He posted a career-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field vs. USC Upstate back in 2022-23, while he’s shot at least 38% from three in each of the last five seasons. Hemenway used his COVID season to return to Death Valley for a fifth season, but appeared in just five games during 2023-24 after dealing with a lower-body injury related to plantar fasciitis.
Hemenway isn’t the only portal target that Maryland is in the mix with as former North Florida guard Chaz Lanier entered the portal while remaining in the 2024 NBA Draft process. Meanwhile, Maryland has already added Ja’Kobi Gillespie, Selton Miguel and Rodney Rice to restock next season’s backcourt with Julian Reese and Derik Queen taking over in the frontcourt.
