Former Terps in the NFL: Week One

Week one of the 2022 NFL season is now complete and already one former Terp has shined. Bills receiver Stefon Diggs finished the opening night game against the Rams with eight receptions, 122 receiving yards and one touchdown.

Other notable former Terps on the offensive side of the ball were Panthers receiver DJ Moore and Titans tight end Chig Okonkwo. Despite coming up on the short end of the Baker Mayfield reunion game, Moore finished with one rush for seven yards while three receptions for 43 receiving yards. In his first regular NFL game, Okonkwo finished with one reception for 11 yards as the Titans fell 21-20 to the New York Giants

On defense, Nick Cross drew his first career start in his first game and finished the weekend with four total tackles. Cross, who celebrated his 21st birthday on Saturday, has drawn praise from the Colts staff all offseason as head coach Frank Reich backed those claims heading into week one. “This guy, he’s not your typical 21-year-old. I mean, I won’t even go into the detail, but this guy is incredibly mature in a lot of ways, and I don’t get that from just talking to him because he’s kind of a quiet guy, but you watch his habits,” Reich told reporters last Monday. “His habits – like if you walk around this building for a week and just monitored every person, you would say he’s different. He’s very disciplined. He’s a very disciplined person. So, I think he’s positioned himself well to play early.”

Elsewhere, other defensive former Terps like Packers safety Darnell Savage, Colts defensive Yannick Ngakoue, Seahawks defensive lineman Quinton Jefferson and Lions linebacker Josh Woods also made plays. Savage, Ngakoue, and Jefferson finished with two tackles while Woods finished with one tackle. One notable former Terp who would normally make a large impact is JC Jackson. But Jackson is still recovering from a surgery he had done in the preseason so he was out for week one.

Kicking off the season drawing the first Terp of the week is receiver Stefon Diggs. Diggs had a stellar night on one of the top corners in the league of Jalen Ramsey. Diggs helped lead the Bills to an opening night win over the LA Rams who are the defending Super Bowl Champs 31-10.
