Maryland will have its toughest opponent to-date when they host SMU at 7:30 PM on Saturday. We delve into the latest tidbits from College Park:
Defensive notes…Maryland will have to replace cornerback Tarheeb Still this upcoming weekend after a hand injury sidelined him last weekend. Just as head coach Mike Locksley said, the belief is that Still is available for Maryland’s conference opener against Michigan and there’s confidence that comes to fruition early this week. Maryland is also likely to have cornerback Corey Coley back this weekend with him back practicing ahead of week three. Elsewhere on defense, defensive tackle Taizse Johnson was spotted in a scout team jersey during the open portion of Tuesday’s practice. He’s battling back from a setback through camp and could miss this week’s game, as well.
Recruiting…Maryland has Churchill WR Zeke Avit in the fold and he’ll be back on campus this weekend when the Terps host SMU. There will also be a concentrated effort to bring talent from northern Virginia on campus this weekend and the staff will return the favor by having a presence in Virginia Beach on Thursday and Friday.
2023 target…elsewhere, Maryland is gradually becoming a player for Imhotep (PA) safety Rahmir Stewart with his timeline shifting into the fall, but another target they’ve made a concentrated push for recently? Virginia defensive lineman Elijah Hughes. Stanford was the school routinely mentioned in best position heading into late summer, Hughes’s original commitment timeframe, but he’s continued to keep the door open as the staff makes another push. Hughes sits high on defensive coordinator Brian Williams’s wishlist and with a pair of defensive linemen in the fold, they’re trying to stay local to add the third piece. There’s still confidence from Virginia Tech’s end, but consistent concern in his recruitment that Stanford is the player to beat.
