Florida edge rusher set to officially visit Maryland

Belen Jesuit (FL) three-star edge rusher Gavench Marcelin has watched his recruitment pick back up through spring ball but after wrapping up last week, the three-star edge rusher has shifted his attention to the recruiting trail where he has three official visits set.

Other schools could still swoop into the mix, but Marcelin will kick off his visits with his second-ever visit to Pitt beginning with an official on Friday. “I’m trying to do all five, figure out dates. I don’t want to overload my summer so I can focus on my season and have my own workouts, so I’m not distracted by recruiting.”

Maryland will be next as the 6-foot-3, 215-pound edge rusher received an in-person visit from defensive coordinator Brian Williams earlier this month. “He came by for our spring game and a practice. He’s been by the school before too,” Marcelin told IBG. “We stopped talking for a little then when spring ball started and he came down to south Florida, we’ve been talking since.”

Maryland has made themselves a presence in Florida during Locksley’s tenure and Williams’ presence in College Park has been a big reason why. Marcelin admitted Williams’ familiarity with his area helps as the two have built depth to the relationship. “I like how he recruits the area. He’s from here. I want to see what Maryland is about now. He hasn’t promised anything and that’s important because a lot of people give false a promises or can’t back up what they say. Everything he’s said, he’s been able to prove whether it’s analytics, stats from the defense over the years.”

Marcelin currently plans to close out his officials with an official visit to East Carolina the weekend of June 23. With all schools eyeing the three-star as an edge rusher, Marcelin knows how he’ll separate his three primary contenders.

“I want to see how they develop their players. They’re NFL history at my position or like the staff’s track record as a whole. Can’t forget the academic side as well.”

A decision could also come in the midst of one of his three official visits.

“I plan on doing it going into my senior year but maybe I fall in love with a school, who knows. I believe I could commit. Obviously I need to speak to my family and the people helping me out, but I could see that.”

Marcelin is rated a three-star prospect and an 83 overall by On3, sitting as the 216th-best prospect.
