Bishop Ireton Athlete Amondi James Returns To Maryland

Bishop Ireton tight end Amondi James has been on Maryland’s radar since the spring and the staff anted up with a verbal offer back in June. As the staff has monitored his status and been staying in contact since, James made it to College Park over the weekend for his first game day visit when he was able to watch Maryland take down SMU 34-27.

“It was good. Loved it, it was a hard fought game so loved it,” he told Inside the Black and Gold. “It was a great game. Maryland was down and they fought back so I loved that and they were victorious. I just love the fight back.”

Assistants Mike Miller and Lance Thompson are leading the way as the area and position coach. “They’ve always been sending me edits and keeping me in the loop. They’ve showed they want me so I always love that,” James added as he got a chance to connect with Thompson on the trip. “I’m about to drop my film so it’s really about playing both ways, which side of the ball. It doesn’t matter to me, wherever coach wants me. They want to see my first three game tape.”

Maryland isn’t alone in that regard as both Boston College and Virginia Tech are keeping tabs on James’s senior season. The staff is keeping the door open to a possible move to defensive end, but where he plays isn’t a dire concern to James. “It really doesn’t matter, I just feel like my hands are special. I can play tight end or defensive end, it’s really whatever. I play whatever coach needs me to play.”

What sticks out most to James when it comes to Maryland?

“Hometown school. Very close to making a decision but just putting all the pieces together to the puzzle. They’re definitely the top choice.”

James is not yet rated by On3.
