After unofficial visit, in-state target sets official visit to Maryland

Tuesday was another busy day in College Park as Gonzaga (DC) three-star cornerback Devenchi “Deuce” Arnold made his way back to Maryland, while multiple players from Calvert Hall made the short trip to campus to watch practice. That gave Maryland a chance to offer two more local prospects in ATH Alijah Hamond and DL Asaiah-Allan Hamond, but it also gave teammate and top tight end target, Calvert Hall (MD) three-star JT Taggart, a chance to get a closer look at one of his top schools.

“It was a great time up there,” Taggart told IBG. “I got to talk with coach Sumlin and coach Locks for a bit then watched practice, went to the meetings. It was nice. Really liked seeing them in their flow and rhythm. I got to talk with Preston [Howard] after practice a little too.”

Taggart has been able to sit in position meetings at other schools, but his experience on Tuesday gave him a different perspective into his development plan in College Park. “I really enjoyed sitting in meetings and learning how they coach them up then install new plays. The staff showed me they can develop their tight ends. I know they use them a lot in their offense too.”

Taggart was also able to sit down with lead recruiter, Kevin Sumlin, before reconnecting with head coach Mike Locksley. “We just talked about a lot about development and where I need to be at. He was talking to me about how he coaches, too, and his style on building the program. Just building a relationship, it’s been good. I’m going to get back up there for my official.”

That official visit to Maryland will take place the weekend of June 7 while Taggart looks to finalize a visit to West Virginia. The 6-foot-6, 210-pound tight end will also return to Colorado for their spring game later this month after taking a trip out west to check out the Buffs for a game last fall.

Boston College, Vanderbilt, Minnesota, Indiana and Miami (FL) are among the early double digit offers for Taggart as he maps out his visit schedule before a likely summer commitment, but heading into the end of his junior year, where he’s leaning remains wide open.

“To me, all the schools are equal. They recruit me very well so just going with the flow and see God’s plan for me, see where I go.”

JT Taggart is rated a three-star prospect and an 87 overall by On3, sitting as the 22^nd-best prospect in Maryland.
