Maryland kicked off spring practice on Thursday and hosted a group of local prospects across the 2024, 2025 and 2026 classes.
One 2024 target that made his way for a return visit was Highland Springs (VA) three-star quarterback Khristian Martin, who got his first glimpse of practice to give him a new perspective on the offense.
“They have a lot of great athletes so it’s important for me as a quarterback to be able to throw to guys like that,” Martin told IBG. “I’ve seen along with great coaching, coach Locksley is going to be there so regardless of who the offensive coordinator is, it’s coach Locksley’s offense. That’s a big thing, that’s important to me so I love a lot about the program. I feel like I’m wanted there so they’re really high on my list.”
Wide receiver coach Gunter Brewer has led the way thus far while director of recruiting operations Tommy Paolucci and general manager Smoke Dixon spent time with Martin on the sidelines during practice. “They went over how and why they do some certain things. On gameday you really only see the guys that play but during practice, you can see they have a lot of talent even deeper on the roster. That was great to see from that standpoint.”
Martin had a close eye on his position group as well. “It was also great to see how they develop the quarterbacks how the quarterback. Obviously it was only the first day of practice, but you get to see how they work with them so that was great.”
A big piece of Tuesday’s visit was spending extensive time with offensive coordinator Josh Gattis during the visit.
“I sat down and was in meetings with the quarterbacks so that was good to see. Then I sat down with coach Gattis when I got there to meet, introduce and everything. We talked some football, getting back down there and those details.”
Getting a closer look at the behind the scenes gave Martin an in-depth look at the program with Maryland battling Virginia, Virginia Tech and Indiana among others.
“A lot of it is quarterback friendly from what I’ve seen. Coach Gattis is a great teacher, so I feel like if I went down there today and he taught it, I’d have some type of grasp on it. I feel like going down there, being able to sit in meetings, being able to talk to him for a little bit, have somewhat of a grasp of the concept that we talked about. Things like that are really important. Things they do, how they do it and then being able to teach it clearly.”
Martin is exploring the idea of taking an official visit to Maryland, though nothing is set yet. “We talked about the spring game and then getting down there to throw, be around the team, be around the coaches.”
Martin unofficially visited Virginia on Thursday.
Martin is rated a three-star prospect and an 84 overall by On3, sitting as the 33rd-best prospect in Virginia.
