2025 four-star QB talks first impression of Josh Gattis on latest visit

2022 marked a big fall for Archbishop Spalding (MD) four-star quarterback Malik Washington after soaking in his first full season as the starter. Nearly 3,000 passing yards later and the 6-foot-3 quarterback lived up to the profile that so many who’ve watched him have built.

Washington dazzled with the ball in his hands, using his legs to evade pressure and extend plays, but also proving to be more than just a running quarterback after routinely fitting the ball into tight windows. After one season, Washington showed exactly why he’s viewed as the next big local quarterback but he’s not satisfied going into year two.

“Just definitely got to keep improving, not get complacent. What we did last year is over, it’s a whole new season, whole new team so just keep building,” Washington told IBG. Aside from team workouts and AAU basketball with Team Thrill, Washington has a plan for year two.

“Some more mobility stuff. I ran it last year but I can definitely do more with my legs and then just kind of sit in the pocket a little bit longer, not escaping as early.”

Washington has already become a known commodity on the recruiting trail with Penn State, Arkansas, Boston College, West Virginia and Duke among the early offers but it’s Maryland who hosted him last. And the last visit carried weight for Washington.

“It was nice. Talked to the new offensive staff, talked to coach [Josh] Gattis for a while,” Washington told IBG. “We sat down and talked ball for a like an hour, just sitting there talking Xs and Os, analytics. It was good to just talk with him as a the person and think on that level.”

Washington also got the chance to sit down with head coach Mike Locksley. “We chopped it up for a bit. Always good seeing him and reconnecting.”

With spring ball now in full swing, Washington’s visit schedule is fluid as he sets his visit as time becomes available. The local quarterback was a possibility to visit for the first spring practice on Tuesday, but will look to visit campus in the coming weeks as he irons out a date.

Washington is rated a four-star prospect and a 90 overall by On3.
