’25 WR Vernon Allen talks return visit to Maryland

Maryland was able to get Baltimore City College (MD) duo Jahmari Powell-Wonson and Vernon Allen on campus this weekend as Powell-Wonson, who became the first receiver to commit back in the spring, was able to reconnect with the coaching staff.

As for Allen, the 6-foot-1.5 receiver got a chance to watch the offense further as he took note of the versatility of how the receivers were used. “They definitely line up in different spots. They’re all very versatile receivers. A lot of them can do it all,” Allen told IBG. “That’s really what Maryland is looking for and I can see that.”

Wide receiver coach Gunter Brewer and inside linebacker coach Lance Thompson have done well making the Terps an early presence in his recruitment, but his latest visit gave him a chance to delve further into the fit. Though Maryland’s offense struggled against the Illini, Allen is a fan of the fit.

“I definitely like the offense. The offense is very versatile. A lot of receivers are doing a lot of different things. They get a chance to move around to be playmakers. I just really like the offense.”

Wide receiver coach Gunter Brewer has been consistent with the local three-star ever since contact with 2025 prospects officially began in August as the duo stay in near-daily contact.

“It’s been great. Coach Brew is a good guy. He texts me every day so we’ve been able to get close.”

Allen also visited Penn State for the White Out game against Iowa last month and told IBG he expects to return to College Park for the Terps’ next home game against the Nittany Lions.

Allen is rated a three-star prospect and an 86 overall by On3, sitting as the 100th-best wide receiver in the country.
