What Kevin Willard, Jahmir Young said after 69-60 win at UCLA

Maryland basketball picked up its fourth straight win, but more importantly, its first road win of the season after defeating UCLA, 69-60, in Kevin Willard’s 300th career win.

Jahmir Young led the way for Maryland behind a career-high 37 points, the fourth-most by a Terrapin in a true road game and the most by a Terp since Diamond Stone dropped 39 on Penn State in 2015. Donta Scott would be the second Terp to step up as the second Terp in double figures, posting 17 points and six rebounds, but the rest of the supporting cast was nonexistent. Outside of Young and Scott, Maryland scored just 15 points on 3-of-18 shooting.

Still, Maryland led by as many as 20 before a second-half UCLA comeback made it a one-possession game with five minutes remaining before Young stepped up down the stretch.

Everything that head coach Kevin Willard and Jahmir Young said postgame:

Willard on Jahmir Young’s performance

“He was phenomenal. He had it going early. He felt it. He made some great reads early on coming off down screens. I think he saw that first one go in, you saw his eyes. He really wanted the basketball. And then at the end of the game, we needed a bucket and with Julian [Reese] out, put the ball in his hands and he made some big plays.”

Young on his career-high 37 points vs. UCLA

“Just remembering that feeling from last year, just coming in here, we haven’t got a road game yet this year. So just trying to lead the young guys, lead this team and just make it a personal thing and really just going out and playing as hard as I can. We got a break for a few days, so just going out, leaving it all on the floor.”

Willard on Mady Traore stepping in due to foul trouble

“Mady’s been in a tough spot all year because of injuries. He hasn’t practiced at the five spot and he went out there and just did a phenomenal job of not messing the game up, of going in there, playing hard. He had some really good defensive possessions and I think everyone really stepped up.”

Willard on Maryland’s team rebounding in the win

“Something about Mick Cronin’s teams, they’re going to rebound and we got in foul trouble. We got small and I think going small must’ve helped us a little bit because we’re able to get a little bit lower, box out, create a little more space and I thought Deshawn [Harris-Smith] did a phenomenal job of chasing some rebounds down really being proactive on the glass. I know you don’t want to talk about it.”

Young on his confidence during the game vs. UCLA

“Just trying to get downhill, just put pressure on them. We got in the one-and-one early, so just trying to get down, play off two feet…there were so many fouls was a lot of fouls. We [were] stopping the game a lot today.”
