Virginia lineman eyeing regional schools for official visits

With prospects across the 2024 class in the midst of finalizing summer visit plans, Maryland has made Virginia a priority with running back coach Latrell Scott strengthening the relationships that inside linebacker coach Lance Thompson and wide receiver coach Gunter Brewer kicked off dating back to last cycle. The staff saw those efforts pay off for Mountain View (VA) defensive lineman Eric Mensah and visiting campus for a spring practice, he’s set to return to campus next month.

Mensah confirmed with IBG that he will officially visit Maryland the weekend of June 16, marking the second visit to College Park this calendar year. Mensah could officially visit Virginia the weekend of June 23 while his second set official is to Virginia Tech the final weekend of June.

It’s clear why Maryland is in the mix heading into summer.

“When I went there it was really tough. I came inside and the building was so tough, just like watching them practice, seeing what they do, what they listen to, how the coaches coach, it was just really good,” Mensah told IBG. Inside linebacker coach Lance Thompson has led the way so far. “It’s been very good so far,” Mensah said of his relationship with his area recruiter. “I’ve learned that is he very good and when he says something, he means it. When he’s talking about football, he knows what he’s talking about.”

Maryland is recruiting Mensah, a 6-foot-3, 265-pound lineman, as a defensive tackle and learning about the Terps’ strength and conditioning program under Ryan Davis is among the priority questions he’s looking to have answered.

“Mainly just like living there as if I was going to Maryland, just how they do their things throughout the day. Then seeing what their nutrition person says, their strength room. I saw the weight room, it was so tough, but I want to see it closer and see what they have. I’d love to see the dorms, too.”

Mensah added he’ll look to have his decision made “before my season starts or beginning of senior year.”

In addition to football workouts, Mensah wrapped up track and field where he’s shined in shotput and discuss while running a 13.7-second 100 meter as an interior line target.

Eric Mensah is rated a three-star prospect and an 88 overall by On3, sitting as the 16th-best prospect in Virginia.
