VIP: Big Ten TE visits Maryland, top ’25 QB on campus, update on ’24 target

Maryland was able to host a handful of visitors this weekend as head coach Mike Locksley and the staff continue to chip away at their long list of local targets, while a portal target shares the latest after taking his first trip to campus. The latest:

As expected, former Michigan TE Matthew Hibner made his way to campus for an unofficial visit on Friday where he was able to connect with the bulk of the offensive staff. “It was a lot of fun, super comprehensive. Met most of the offensive staff and got to hang out with some of the guys,” Hibner told IBG. That includes Billy Edwards Jr., who has been a steady force in the Terps’ chances heading into February, while Hibner was able to briefly reconnect with his former OC and current Maryland OC Josh Gattis. Hibner came out of the weekend still uncommitted with his timeline going into the spring as initially expected, but whether it’s for an official visit or a second unofficial visit, Hibner confirmed plans to return to College Park once spring practice opens. I have Hibner firmly entrenched as warm on the big board as the Terps remain a viable contender coming out of the weekend. I’m also hearing that Hibner does not have visits planned to other schools coming out of the weekend as Maryland inches closer to filling a position of need.

It wasn’t the same list of visitors as it was a week ago with a long list of DMV talent in south Florida for a 7-on-7 tournament, but head coach Mike Locksley and his staff hosted a top target in four-star QB Malik Washington. “I came up, we talked some ball for a little bit. We slid by the basketball game then headed out,” Washington told IBG. “I talked with coach Locks for a little bit then I talked with some of the quarterback assistants and stuff.” Washington hoped to make it in for last weekend’s game against Michigan State, but co-defensive coordinator Brian Williams made Saturday’s visit possible as the priority target spent time with Williams and head coach Mike Locksley among others. Washington doesn’t have plans to visit other schools with Spalding’s basketball in full swing, along with consistent training with SFA QB coach Aaron, but the Terps’ early confidence in their chances continues heading into next month.

Washington wasn’t alone as several Spalding defensive backs, including three-star CB Jayden Shipps and three-star SAF Trent Gillis, were able to get facetime with the Terps’ new position coach, while Washington was able to meet Aazaar Abdul-Rahim face-to-face. Both Shipps and Gillis remain viable names to know in the secondary with both making their way to campus for at least two games in 2023 and high on the hometown team. Brian Williams has done a great job laying the foundation for the Terps’ chances at the MIAA school.

I’m also hearing that 2024 cornerback Kevyn “Kerm” Humes was back on campus on Saturday as Maryland continues to trend as the team to beat heading into the final ten days of the 2024 cycle. We’ll keep tabs on his status this week with the initial expectation that he’d officially visit one of the final two weekends with this upcoming weekend the likely pick. Aside from Maryland’s pursuit of Humes, I’d expect Shamar McIntosh to be the final signing as the Terps put the close on the 2024 high school cycle.
