Christiansburg (VA) three-star offensive tackle Carter Stallard will turn his attention from football to track and field in the spring as the 6-foot-8, 315-pound lineman is set to make his shotput debut. It’s a move that came to fruition in the months leading up to his junior season after talking with his coaches, giving him a chance to try something new while adding to his upper body strength.
As he looks ahead to his new challenge in the spring, Stallard has also worked on maintaining his weight while reworking his 315-pound frame to add mass. “Just changing up how I’m built,” Stallard added.
The towering lineman has also enjoyed a recent uptick in his recruitment with increased contact with a handful of SEC programs. But there’s one school who, again, is making its interest known as Stallard primarily fields a regional offer list. “Syracuse did, they got a new coaching staff so they’re trying to get me up. A lot of the schools that have offered me have been talking about scheduling stuff. I had a recruiter at Penn State and changed jobs, I guess he moved up there and then he hit me up and told me that they needed to come up and visit.”
Maryland, meanwhile, has kept in close contact after Stallard made a pair of offseason visits to campus. Wide receiver coach Gunter Brewer has kept in daily contact while Stallard added, “I get the occasional phone call from [Brian] Braswell.”
“He’ll send me like gameday graphics, then Bible verses too,” Stallard said about Brewer’s recruiting efforts.
Stallard’s experience working with star lineman DJ Glaze during last year’s camp also gave the Virginia native another perspective into how Maryland’s offensive line works.
“I like their left tackle. We talked at camp, he was the one that coached me. just the way they practice so technical before. Most guys will do station drills where they go from pass to run blocking. They do it all in one. They’ll do some pass block drills with a PVC pipe, do a couple kicksteps. Then the next drill will be them running through the PVC pipes as run blockers. I like how that’s done. That’s how I train, so watching him…that Auburn defensive end, [DJ Glaze] was working him. It’s good to see all of that.”
With his offseason visit schedule still fluid, Stallard is looking ahead to a return visit to Maryland for his third visit.
“I’m planning on it. They’re one of my top schools and I really want to get back up there. They’re my only real Big Ten offer so I want to get up there, really see how they do things in the Big Ten. You’ve got to go on like ten visits to really learn about a school.”
Carter Stallard is rated a three-star and an 87 overall by On3, sitting as the 17th-best prospect in Virginia.
