Several former Terps were in action during the Shrine Bowl on Thursday night as former Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa teamed up with former Southern Miss running back Frank Gore Jr. to lead the West Team offense through the first half.
After connecting on a three-yard pass to begin the drive in the opening minutes of the second quarter, Taulia Tagovailoa connected with former South Dakota State wide receiver Jadon Janke on a 52-yard pass to get the West Team into the redzone. A few plays later, Taulia leaned on his mobility to avoid pressure and punch in a two-yard rushing touchdown, marking the first touchdown of the game.

Taulia would enter the game the next series, connecting with former USC WR Tahj Washington on a 30-yard pass to set the West Team up with an eventual 26-yard field goal. Taulia’s day ended at halftime as he finished 9-of-14 for a game-high 142 yards as UCF QB John Rhys Plumlee opened the second half.
Tagovailoa was among the five standouts highlighted by Jacob Richman of LoneStar Live for his performance.
Another player at the Shrine Bowl looking to make his own name, Taulia Tagovailoa entered the game in the second quarter and almost instantly made his mark. On his second throw, the Big Ten’s all-time leading passer launched a ball to Jadon Janke (South Dakota State) for 52 yards that set up an eventual two-yard scramble by Tagovailoa for a touchdown. He continued to lead the West Team offense for the remainder of the quarter and finished with a game-high 142 passing yards.
Taulia was paired up with former Maryland cornerback Ja’Quan Sheppard, who had a nice play against former Michigan WR Cornelius Johnson in coverage. Cornerback Tarheeb Still, who drew rave reviews during practice through the week, was paired up with offensive lineman Gottlieb Ayedze for the East Team, who fell 26-11.
