The secondary has been an active position over the last week for Maryland football after safety Tamarcus Cooley then cornerback Gavin Gibson elected to hit the transfer portal, and over the last 48 hours, the position saw additional attrition as Tarheeb Still heads to the NFL and Corey Coley heads to the transfer portal.
Still, a four-year starter in Maryland’s cornerback room, ended his college career with 165 total tackles, 28 pass deflections and a pair of forced fumbles while adding 294 yards and a touchdown on 42 punt returns. Five of Still’s six interceptions came during his senior season when he became one of only three FBS players to have two games of two interceptions and finished second in FBS in the category. Still, who was also named the Jim Thorpe National DB of the Week following the Nebraska game, will now prepare to become the third cornerback drafted in two seasons under position coach Henry Baker.
Still was also part of the foundational 2020 class for head coach Mike Locksley after signing with the program as a former three-star prospect out of Timber Creek (NJ)
As for Corey Coley, he won’t be heading to the pros next year, and he also won’t wear a Maryland uniform again after announcing his decision to enter the portal on Sunday evening.
“I will forever be thankful for the opportunity given to me by Coach Locks and the University of Maryland staff. Playing at the college level has always been a dream of mine. However, after careful consideration and deep conversations with my family, I have decided to enter the transfer portal,” Coley wrote on X/Twitter.
Coley has been a mainstay in Maryland’s cornerback rotation since he arrived in College Park, appearing in 30 games and finishing with 37 tackles and three pass deflections.
As for the future of Marland’s cornerback room, the position now turns to multiple underclassmen with Lionel Whitaker the only upperclassman currently slated to return to the program in 2024. Maryland will look to the transfer portal to replace both Still and Ja’Quan Sheppard, who started opposite of Still in his first and final season with the program.
