Second-year CB Gavin Gibson to enter transfer portal

Maryland football has already watched a pair of players hit the portal in the first days following the 2023 season finale, and a third player plans to depart from the program after cornerback Gavin Gibson announced his intention to enter the transfer portal.

“First and foremost, I would like to thank the University of Maryland for the opportunity to continue my education and play the sport I love. I would also like to thank Coach Baker & the entire coaching staff for helping develop me into the player I am today. Secondly, I would like to thank my family for supporting me every step of the way and having my back through it all. I want to thank all of my teammates who I’ve built lifelong relationships with since I touched down in [College Park]. With that being said, I will be entering my name in the transfer portal,” Gibson announced on X/Twitter.

Gibson, a 5-foot-11 cornerback from Hickory, North Carolina, played in 20 games during two seasons with the program and posted 32 total tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack and three pass breakups. His first career start came against SMU during his freshman year, tallying three solo tackles and recording his first pass breakup.

Gibson, a one-time Navy commit, committed to Maryland over Virginia before enrolling in January of 2022. Gibson’s decision to leave the program delivers a blow to a cornerback room expecting turnover with both Ja’Quan Sheppard and Tarheeb Still expected to head to the NFL. Maryland now returns Corey Coley, Lionel Whitaker and Perry Fisher to the cornerback room while current 2024 commits Lloyd Irvin and Larry Tarver Jr. will both enroll in January.
