Scheme fit highlights official visit for Virginia DL Eric Mensah

Mountain View (VA) defensive lineman Eric Mensah was already familiar with Maryland with inside linebacker coach Lance Thompson in pursuit through the offseason into the spring, while the 6-foot-3 lineman made his way to campus during spring ball for an unofficial visit.

After officially visiting Virginia last weekend, Maryland was next up to bat where sophomore linebacker Caleb Wheatland served as Mensah’s host. “I liked it a lot. Just spending time with the guys and the coaches was a really good experience,” Mensah told IBG. “They highlighted everything. All the good, everything I need to know. I like the relationships I’ve built at Maryland.”

Mensah was with the defensive coaching staff through the weekend where he and the rest of the official visitors got a chance to close out the weekend at head coach Mike Locksley’s house, but the highlight was spending time with defensive coordinator Brian Williams where the two were able to watch film. “That part was what was really good. They emphasized how I play the pass rush and they were telling me what I should improve on, the things that would help me. They see me fitting in at the zero and just the whole line. They said I’m versatile so I can play across the line.”

Mensah came into the weekend with Virginia, Virginia Tech and Maryland high on his list while Ohio State is monitoring the lineman following camp earlier this week. With the Buckeyes’ offer currently on-hold, Mensah arrived back home from his Maryland official visit early Sunday afternoon and will gear up for his third official and likely final visit before he decides. Virginia Tech is next up with an official visit set for next weekend with a decision likely another month away.

“I’ll probably decide around July, August.”

Mensah is rated a three-star prospect and an 88 overall by On3, sitting as the 17th-best prospect in Virginia.
