Tuesday at midnight marked the first night that college coaches could directly contact 2023 prospects as Maryland and head coach Mark Turgeon stayed active. The Terps extended a handful of local offers, including DeMatha four-star guard Jacoi Hutchinson and St. John’s power forward Amani Hansberry, while St. Frances combo guard Jahnathan Lamothe picked up the hometown offer. The 6-foot-4, 180-pound combo guard admitted it felt good to hear from the hometown school on the first day possible.

“To know that they’re actually interested and they want to build a relationship. It’s just a blessing to have that conversation and know they really want me on their campus,” Lamothe told Inside the Black & Gold. Head coach Mark Turgeon made the call to Lamothe. “He just told me to just keep working. He doesn’t offer a lot so the offer to me is special. Just being from here, keep that in mind when making a decision and see what the campus is like.”

That will happen very soon as Lamothe and five-star teammate Kwame Evans will head to Maryland for an unofficial visit on Monday. “I’ve been to a lot of games so it’s not the first time,” Lamothe added. “Just seeing the campus, seeing anything new, the basketball arena. Just the start of getting a feel for where I want to play college basketball at.”

Lamothe already has a strong feel for the Terps program. “I think I know a lot. I think it’d be a nice fit, just going up there to see what type of guys they’re bringing in.”

Lamothe also took an unofficial visit to Georgetown on Tuesday and previously visited Pittsburgh, while Ohio State extended an offer shortly before the Terps. Since then, Marquette, Pitt, and Georgetown have all reached out to the four-star prospect as there’s been a consistent theme in each call. “Me being able to play multiple positions and being a winner and coming from two great programs in St. Frances and Team Durant, I think that’s what they like the most.” What’s the first thing Lamothe will look at when visiting his suitors?

“What they expect me to come in and do, what role I’ll be playing.”

Lamothe is rated a four-star prospect and a 92 overall by 247Sports, sitting as the second-best prospect in Maryland.
