Where Maryland football landed in ESPN's updated FPI for 2025 season

ESPN released its college football power index (FPI) for the 2025 season this week with Maryland football checking in 61st overall and 16th in the Big Ten, ahead of only Northwestern and Purdue.

While the Big Ten did place three inside the top ten (Ohio State, Penn State, Oregon), Maryland avoids all three in 2025 while Michigan (17) and Nebraska (25) are the lone teams on the schedule who snuck inside ESPN’s top 25.

Though sportsbooks list Maryland’s win total at 4.5 heading into the Aug. 30 opener vs. FAU, ESPN’s index projects a .500 record (5.9 – 6.1) with a 59% chance at bowl eligibility and the 2025 schedule ranked 61st nationally.

Maryland previously ranked 70th in ESPN’s SP+ rankings with the defense (48) checking in well ahead of the offense (93) and special teams 68th nationally, though the same model also projected at least five wins in 2025 and the schedule ranked 52nd nationally.

After welcoming the spring portal additions to campus over the last two weeks, Maryland will welcome its final wave of reinforcements with the remainder of the 2025 class expected to enroll on campus the weekend of June 13.

“We signed 32 players, so we half our team's not here yet. So if you look at the recruiting process, we got a bunch of guys coming,” head coach Mike Locksley said following the spring game. “Depth won't be an issue.”

“You can't restock game experience. You have to get game experience, and that's my job, to get these young guys ready to play the way we practice.”

Maryland kicks off the season in 97 days vs. Florida Atlantic and first-year head coach Zach Kittley.
