In a peculiar twist days before the season opener, Maryland football will have another piece back in the secondary.

Weeks after being dismissed from the program, a source confirmed that cornerback Dontay Joyner is expected to re-join the program. Joyner was dismissed after facing multiple charges stemming from an incident that landed him in jail for nearly one month prior to his trial, though a deal was agreed to with reduced charges and a anger management course required.

Joyner's arrival marks a notable boost on the field, though adds a layer of questions off the field after the program backtracked despite head coach Mike Locksley indicating a change in scenary was needed.

"This summer really was not a good thing for him, not a good thing for us. I hate to see him have to go through what he went through, and so based on our conversations, we both have decided that mutually decided that he should find another place. He has two years of eligibility left. We're helping him find a place to go play. He's a guy that deserves another chance. We just felt like because of what he went through here in the state of Maryland, he probably needs a fresh shot."

When Joyner is available to play is unclear, though his return will likely add a notable boost. A former NFL prospect, Joyner was expected to start as the slot corner this upcoming season with Amari Jackson and Jamare Glasker expected to start outside. Maryland added Jordan Scruggs out of the transfer portal, while adding multiple freshmen in the secondary including Darrell Carey and Zahir Cobb.
