Virginia WR Mekhai White updates recruitment, suitors, timeline

King George (VA) three-star wide receiver Mekhai White has enjoyed a slower pace in his recruitment in recent weeks after taking a pair of official visits in June, first to Maryland then Virginia Tech. The three-star wideout has since spent July bunkering down ironing out the final stretch in his recruitment. “A lot of thinking, going over things, talking with my family,” White said. The 6-foot-2, 187-pound wide receiver admitted that he’s considering more than just the two regional programs, though. “I feel like now, Michigan is getting back into the picture because they didn’t get one of the guys they wanted,” White told IBG. “Tennessee as well.” Michigan was involved with White back in the spring before he dubbed the Wolverines his top school, but the mutual interest gradually faded heading into official visit season. Despite being the longtime favorites, Michigan missed out on Providence Day (NC) three-star receiver Jordan Shipp on Sunday as White gives them another look. Elsewhere, after landing Chanz Wiggins earlier in the month, Virginia Tech followed it up with a public pledge from four-star Keylan Adams as the Hokies remain involved. Meanwhile, Maryland has kept in heavy contact with its priority local target with wide receiver coach Gunter Brewer leading the way. “We talk almost every day, me and coach Brew. We have that connection. It’s still strong. He’s a great coach. We stay close, it’s been good.” Maryland was the only school to get two visits in June, first an official visit the weekend of June 9 then an unofficial visit on June 16 with his brother for Stefon Diggs’ camp inside SECU Stadium. The second visit gave White a chance to talk to the Maryland legend. “I talked to him a little bit. We just talked. He gave me some advice and what to look for but it was just really cool talking to one of the best receivers in the NFL.” Maryland is working to get White on campus one more time before he makes his decision and a trip on July 29 remains on the table with other visits still in play. “I am thinking about other visits. I’m thinking about where to. I’m undecided right now.” White also updated his commitment timeline. “I’m thinking maybe at the end of this month, early August so it’ll be the next couple of weeks.” White is rated a three-star prospect and an 88 overall by On3, sitting as the 14th-best prospect in Virginia and the nation’s 94th-best wide receiver.
