2024 Tuscarora (VA) offensive tackle Fletcher Westphal is in the very early stages of his recruitment but has still made it to Maryland three times already with his latest trip coming on Saturday. The 6-foot-7, 320-pound also made it in for Maryland’s season-opening win against West Virginia, while Saturday gave him another chance to meet with the staff.
“Since this is my third visit to Maryland, I was talking with coach [Brian] Stewart and [head] coach [Mike] Locksley,” Westphal told Inside the Black and Gold. “Great meeting coach [Mike] Locksley for the first time before the game. It was nice to see Maryland and Penn State battle it out.” What were Westphal’s first impressions of Locksley? “I got a great first impression of him. He is a stand-up guy for the players.”
Westphal has seen the Terps on both the winning and losing end this season, but he’s noticed one thing in particular. “Both teams put in their best effort. I know both teams have key players out because of injury, but [Saturday] both teams fought until the end.”
Naturally, Westphal had some takeaways from the Terps’ offensive line play. “The offensive line at Maryland plays with aggression and passion. The [offensive] line has a great mindset and played until the whistle was blown and it was consistent.”
Westphal has also taken game visits to Virginia, Duke, Penn State, and Notre Dame this season and holds offers from Old Dominion, Pitt, Penn State, Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland. Still, Maryland has developed into a familiar spot as Westphal breaks down what he sees in the program.
“Having gone to Maryland a couple of times, the program that they are trying to build is a big family that plays for each other on both offense and defense.”
Westphal will visit Pitt on November 20.
