Maryland football head coach Mike Locksley and his staff will begin welcoming a long list of visitors for officials beginning this upcoming weekend as the Terps look to build on their current six-man class in the 2025 cycle. Highland Springs (VA) Brennan Johnson, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound athlete, is among the first batch of visitors expected on campus as the Richmond product has been on the Terps’ radar through his junior season. After visiting for the Penn State game last fall, Johnson picked up the verbal offer back in January with assistant Latrell Scott leading the way as Maryland looks to land an impact player out of the Virginia powerhouse in consecutive cycles. “Me and the family are pumped,” Johnson told IBG. “Everything has been good. They’ve shown a lot of hospitality. I think they can relate to me. I’ve known coach Locksley for a minute now so it’s like family. They keep in touch a lot. I think we’ve created a great relationship with each other. It’s just very good hospitality and they have good comradery.” While the Virginia athlete lined up at linebacker as a junior, Johnson has seen the bulk of his recruiting focused at defensive back. “It really depends on how much weight I gain, but right now coming in as a freshman I’ll play safety,” he added. Johnson has been able to build a relationship with position coach Zac Spavital through the spring as Scott leads contact, but there’s another connection to the staff. “I created a relationship with coach Aazaar because he recruited my brother to Boston College so that’s really cool. Having him at Maryland now because he was a big reason my brother considered Boston College, so it’s pretty cool.” Michigan State became the latest school to offer while Indiana, Pitt, Temple, South Carolina and Duke are among the schools to extend offers thus far. With an official visit to Virginia already complete and an official visit to Virginia Tech set for the first weekend of June, Johnson has his focus set on the three regional schools as he gets a closer gauge for his commitment timeline during his visits. “I already took a UVA official. That was lit. But a coach came in recently and said after my first three games, things are going to be popping. A lot of coaches haven’t seen me play safety so I’m not going to lock anything down,” he added. “When I have a conversation with coach Locksley, coach Pry, coach Elliott, when we talk, I can find out how long I have to commit. If I have time, I’ll wait but if I don’t, if it’s pressure then I will because I get it with the transfer portal and kids committing. While the Hokies are viewed as the top competition in the race with family ties a driving force, Johnson isn’t ready to name the Hokies his top school heading into his Maryland visit. “A lot of people would say that but I don’t feel like that. All my options are open. I wouldn’t settle to say Virginia Tech is my number one. Maryland is up there. I wouldn’t sweep Maryland under the rug or UVA under the rug. Yeah my dad and my brother went there, but I wouldn’t see it as VT being my number one.” Brennan Johnson is not yet rated by On3. He ended his junior season as the defensive All State and All Region Player of the Year as a linebacker.
