VIP: NFL talent takes in Maryland football’s spring practice, recruits rolling onto campus

After Jerry Jeudy stopped through the facilities on Friday, former Alabama WRs Devonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle joined him on Saturday as the team puts the pads on for the first time. With several new faces, Maryland wrapped up a hectic week with installs already underway on both sides of the ball. With Corey Bullock still sidelined, Kyle Long has drawn rave reviews filling in at guard as the staff irons out its offensive line while second-year QB Cam Edge has turned heads on a few throws through the first three practices. With several new faces in the wide receiver room, receiver Shaleak Knotts is working his way back from an illness while Leon Haughton is proving he can be the big-framed WR needed to replace Dontay Demus. Jaishawn Barham anchors a veteran inside linebacker room once again, but could find himself lined up as an outside ‘backer, while expectations are high for Kellan Wyatt heading into year two. With one padded practice down, we’ll start hearing more about new names beginning to separate themselves.

Several more recruits made it to campus with the staff inviting groups from Maryland, North Carolina and New Jersey onto campus. Phoebus (VA) three-star defensive lineman Anthony Reddick, who we wrote about on Sunday, made his way to campus as the staff examines his fit with running backs coach Latrell Scott tapping into his roots. 2025 Mount Tabor (NC) ATH JaDon Blair made it in on Saturday where he picked up an offer during his first trip to campus. Also on campus on Saturday: 2025 four-star ATH Quincy Porter, a speedster out of Bergen Catholic who sits high on next year’s New Jersey board. 2024 Millville (NJ) three-star WR Ta’Ron Haile and 2025 four-star WR Lotzier Brooks also made their way to campus.

Earlier this week, Maryland hosted a priority recruit with Gonzaga (DC) four-star defensive end DD Holmes unofficially visiting on both Wednesday and Thursday as the Terp are quietly in the mix. Penn State, Michigan and South Carolina are among the teams at the top while Virginia Tech is making a renewed push with new running backs coach Elijah Brooks leading the way, but intel says Maryland is in position to secure an official visit this summer with a commitment prior to his senior year expected.

I could also see Maryland eventually getting an official from freakish four-star defensive end Darien Mayo though the blue blood attention has certainly caught his eye. Meanwhile, four-star teammate Aaron Chiles tells me he will unofficially visit Maryland on Wednesday with the staff getting a chance to impress the top target and his parents. Maryland is still in the mix, but slipping, as this week’s visit gives them a chance to solidify their standing.Logan Delizio contributed to this report Related Links Virginia DL makes long-awaited return to Maryland (+) Veterans leading the way through Maryland football’s spring practices Good Counsel WR returns to Maryland, talks upcoming visits set and official visit plans (+) Maryland men’s lacrosse upset by Michigan in 16-11 Senior Day loss
